-Ahate belongs to the tectosilicate minerals. It is considered a mineral in the varieties of chalcedony (microcrystalline form of quartz) and occurs in various colours, the main one being white. In all its colours, however, it is translucent.
-According to Theophrastus, the Greeks named this mineral after the river Agate (now Drilio) of Sicily where they found it.
Agate was highly valued as an amulet in antiquity. Also, agate goblets were very popular in the Byzantine Empire and during the Renaissance by the aristocrats of the time.
-Red Agate is said to drive away anger and create a sense of security.
