Handmade silver earrings with amethyst and aquamarine stones from the Rain series.
-Amethyst is a violet variety (violet or purple in colour) of the mineral quartz and is used as a precious stone for decorative purposes.
It begins life as clear quartz, but when it ends up in parts of the Earth’s mantle where high temperatures and pressures develop, it turns purple. Depending on the variety of the stone, the purple can verge on black, while in another cut it can look completely colourless. Its name comes from the privative “a” and the verb “methyo” (to be drunk), because in antiquity people believed that this gem protected its owner from drunkenness! In antiquity it was one of the rarest and most precious stones, and its price often matched or even exceeded that of diamond! The price of this stone fell when huge deposits of it were discovered in South America. Amethyst is said to be the stone of meditation.
-Aquamarine is a blue-green variety of beryl.
Its name means “sea water”, because of its colour.
To the ancient Greeks it was Poseidon’s gem, which had slipped out of the Nereids’ treasure chests.
In folk tradition, aquamarine is believed to give the person who wears it insight, courage and happiness!
