Pearl: the queen of the ocean.
While precious stones lie deep in the earth, pearls are found on the seabed, in the heart of a living organism.
Its Greek name comes from the ancient Greek word “marmairo”, which means “to shine”, and the pearl was dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite.
A pearl is a hard material produced in the soft tissue of living shelled molluscs. When a grain of sand or a parasite gets inside an oyster’s shell, the oyster is irritated. Unable to expel the “intruder”, the mollusc produces a smooth, hard, crystalline substance, nacre (calcium carbonate), around it to protect itself. As long as the intruder stays there, the mollusc keeps producing layers of this substance until, after some years, the intruder is trapped inside a smooth, lustrous pearl.
The most precious pearls form spontaneously in nature, but they are very rare. Wild pearls are referred to as natural pearls. Cultured pearls come from pearl-bearing molluscs such as oysters and mussels.
Depending on the oyster or shellfish, the water conditions and the intruder, pearls take on different colours. They are usually found in various tones and shades of silver, gold, blue, cream, pink and green, as well as white and black.
The pearl was a symbol of strength, happiness and purity.
