Quartz is a silicon mineral, specifically pure silicon dioxide, and the second most abundant mineral in nature.
Its Greek name, chalazias, comes from the word “chalaza” (hail), because the colour of common quartz resembles hail.
It is known internationally as “quartz”, a term that comes from the old German word “Quarz”, of unknown etymology.
The various varieties of quartz take their names from their colour or form.
