-Hematite is a mineral whose chemical composition is iron oxide. It is an opaque mineral with a metallic lustre and a colour ranging from silver-grey to black.
-Its name is of Greek origin and comes not from the colour of the mineral, which is dark grey, but from the colour of its streak (the powder it leaves when rubbed), which is red: the colour of blood.
-It has been used in jewellery making since as early as 3000 BC.
-The Egyptians carved scarabs out of hematite, and it was also known to the Cretans, the Mycenaeans and the ancient Greeks.
-It is a typical mineral of iron mines and is found in many parts of the world.
