-Onyx is a variety of agate and belongs to the chalcedony family.
The name is of Greek origin, from the ancient Greek word “onyx”, meaning nail. It refers to the striations seen on the nails of many animals.
-Onyx is formed from bands of chalcedony in alternating colours.
-Mythology tells us that the god Eros cut the toenails of the beautiful goddess Aphrodite with his arrow while she slept. The clippings were scattered on the sand, and later the Fates, to protect them, turned them into stones that would remain unchanged through the ages.
-Over the centuries, black onyx was prized in Ancient Greece, Rome, China and many other countries for properties associated with protection and fertility. It is said that even Queen Cleopatra could not resist its unrivalled charm.
