-Garnet is a silicate mineral derived mainly from metamorphic rocks, but it is also found in several igneous rocks.
-Granatite has been known to humans since the 4th millennium BC and was used as a gemstone and as an abrasive.
-The name Granatis comes from the Latin granatus meaning pomegranate or pomegranate, because some varieties of the plant have the colour of pomegranate seeds.In ancient texts it is referred to as anthrax or anthracon.The name garnet is often used for the mineral.
-The best known are the varieties of garnet in shades of red, which have the special name of almandine but it is also found in other colors.
-In 1900 a rare variety of blue garnet was found in Madagascar.Some grades of garnet show the Alexandrite effect, i.e. they change colour depending on the type of light they receive.
-The red garnet according to traditions is considered a stone of complete devotion.
